The only requirements to be an acolyte are that you are an active participant at First United Methodist Church of Americus and are currently in grade 3, 4, or 5.

As an acolyte you are a minister and a leader of the worship community. The best rule is that everything you do should be done with dignity and care in the simplest way possible so as not to distract the congregation. It is your role to show the joy and reverse of worship. You serve to Gove glory and praise to God. You are to be an outward and very visible sign of Christ's light... to be reliable, attentive, expectant, worship, confident, caring, careful, and joyful to serve the Lord with gladness

Why do we light the candle?

Jesus said, "I'm and the light of the world" (John 8:12). The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus' coming into our world and into our lives. The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus' coming into the presence of the worship community. Many congregations use two candles on the alter to point out that Jesus was both a human being and God. At the end of the service, the light is carried into the world to show that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. The acolyte leaves worship carrying out the lighted candlelighter. This symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are to serve.

Two acolytes serve during each 11:00am worship service. We ask our acolytes to volunteer on a monthly rotation during the academic calendar (i.e. August through December, then January through May). In the event of a scheduling conflict, please contact our children's director to request a substitute or trade with one of our other acolytes.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, call, email or text Joy Franklin at 229-389-8285.

THANK YOU for your willingness to assist during our worship services.
