The word acolyte stems from an Ancient Greek word that meant companion, attendant, or helper. An acolyte is a server in our worship service, helping everyone focus on the presence of God.

We invite students in grades 3, 4 and 5 to participate in this important servant role.

As an acolyte, you minister through your servants heart in the worship community. The acolyte brings the light into the sanctuary, to light the candles on the altar. At the conclusion of the worship, you will extinguish the candles and carry the light out of the sanctuary.

The best rule is that everything you do should be done with dignity and care in the simplest way possible so as not to distract the congregation. It is your role to show the joy of Christ, and reverance of worship. You serve to give glory and praise to God. Join us as we serve together to praise God!

Why do we light the candle?

Jesus said, "I am The Light of the World" (John 8:12).

The presence of the light reminds us of Jesus' coming into our world and into our lives.

The light is carried into the worship service as a symbol of Jesus' coming into the presence of the worship community. Many congregations use two candles on the alter to point out that Jesus was both a human being and God, fully human and fully divine.

At the end of the service, the light is carried into the world to show that Jesus Christ is for all people everywhere. The acolyte leaves worship carrying out the lighted candlelighter. This symbolizes the light of Jesus Christ going out into the world where believers are to serve.

Two acolytes serve during each 11:00am worship service. We ask our acolytes to volunteer on a monthly rotation during the academic calendar (i.e. August through December, then January through May). In the event of a scheduling conflict, please contact our children's director to request a substitute or trade with one of our other acolytes.

If you ever have any questions or concerns, call or email Rev. Daryl Brown. 229-924-3169 or
